(Languages and Interior Design)

Introduction

Habitat academy is en educational and cultural celebration hub.

Having its presence in Kochi & Kolkata, it’s renowned for its revolutionary teaching philosophy: ‘I read- I forget, I practice I learn!’ students here can put into practice what they learnt in the classrooms with unique facilities provided to them. At Habitat-Kolkata one will be part of on-going celebration of culture from all over the world, most of which are celebrated first time in India!

With a centers of excellence, and modern approach, Habitat Academy is imparting interior design program leading to final year BA (Hons) at London Metropolitan University, UK, and seven language courses: Italian, Spanish, German and French (for home students) Bengali, Hindi, Sanskrit (for international students). Languages courses

All classes are thought through audio video aids and regular movie shows in different languages are shown. Students also get to interact with native speakers, who are frequent visitors in the Academy. For in-depth reference work students have normal and digital library facilities.

Languages students gain confidence by participating in cultural events where they can practice the language they are learning by conversing with native speakers and getting to know different countries.

Since its opening in mid-April 2010, Habitat- Kolkata had a number of cultural activities: Argentinean poetry night, Paraguan Drama Day, Mexican Teachers Day, Romance of the Italian Cinema and Literature, El Salvadorean movie festival. Chilean movie and food festival is schedules in November, besides many more in the future..

Language students are assisted by the academy’s placement assistance cell and gets absorbed in the various BPOs, translating houses, travel companies etc. Languages classes are two times a week, 90 minute long.

Interior Design program

Habitat Academy is imparting an international standard 14 month diploma program in Interior Design. Habitat students, who pass out with good grades will be eligible to join the final year of London Metropolitan University BA (Hons) Interior Design & Technology course. Thus students who pass out Habitat Diploma will be able to take transfer to UK for one more year to achieve a bachelor degree, and can work in UK for two years after the graduation. This is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between India and UK in the field of interior design, bringing cost of UK education down and enabling wider group of people across India to opt for an international degree.

Unique features of running sites and factory visits

Habitat Academy has revolutionary teaching philosophy: ‘I read- I forget, I practice I learn!’ All Habitat students go on a regular site’s visits to see the project work in progress. There students learn specifications of materials and their applications. This helps them to gain practical experience, observe progress of work at different stages and understand materials’ usage in-depth. There is also a furniture factory next to the Academy where students learn furniture making techniques. Students watch, touch and learn by physically being inside the factory as well as on running sides. This unique feature at Habitat is available to students through the program.

In house computer lab and architects help

Academy has in-house training lab for auto CAD and 3ds Max, besides which there is also an architectural office in the same building, where students have quick access to working architects and interior designers for any interaction and guidance after their class timings are over.

Habitat students are part of London Met from the moment they join

All interior design students become part of London Met, thorough special university’s students blog (www.spaceblossom.co.uk), where students can add their work, read, explore, learn and see other design students work who are doing similar course at London Met, UK. Consequently students at Habitat Academy become part of the global family from the moment they join, and their classroom experience expands far outside India.

Habitat graduates are independent thinkers

Habitat interior design program teaches not only how to do space planning, but also how to think independently. Through in-depth research and explorations students learn how to come up with their own unique design solutions; and if going to UK is not their option, they can get absorbed in the growing interior design field in India.

Internship and Placements

Towards the end of the course students go for internship (practical training for over a month) with renowned architects and interior designers. Many of them get absorbed in those companies, others find placements at Habitat Academy’s sister company, which specializes in corporate interior design and has offices in 8 cities in India. Students who wish to go on for further studies, move to UK, complete their degree and work in UK for 2 more years. London Metropolitan University has online vacancy database which students can use to find jobs.

To enroll for an interior design course minimum qualification is pass 10+2.

Academy Facilities

Academy has fully air-conditioned classrooms, in-house computer training lab with auto CAD and 3ds Max facilities, on-going sites visits, its own furniture workshop factory for interior design students. In addition Academy has in-house architectural office where students have quick access to working architects and interior designers for any interaction and guidance after their class timings are over.

For language students there are movie projectors with on-going movie shows in different languages. Classes are thought through audio video aids. For in-depth reference work students have normal and digital library facilities.

Location

Habitat Academy Kolkata center is located on Eastern Metropolitan bypass and is accessible from all corners of Kolkata and its suburbs. Students can avail buses, coming up to Ruby Hospital, going towards Garia. Metro rail connection can be availed at Garia station on eastern fringe. Direct buses are available from all directions.
