Kolkata (help•info) (Bengali: কলকাতা ; IPA: [ˈkolkat̪a]), formerly Calcutta (help•info), is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. Kolkata is noted for its revolutionary history, ranging from the Indian struggle for independence to the leftist and trade union movements.
